Smart cities: innovation to improve the quality of life

29/06/2018

At first, when we talk about Business Intelligence, we think of a mathematical or statistical in front of a computer at the insights department of a company that wants to optimize its processes, but … it is not only analytical and visualization for managers, can also be applied to improve our quality of life.

It is becoming more common to hear the concept of Smart city, and it is predicted that by the year 2020 there will be 34 billion devices with internet Access. That means that each person will have, on average, about 4 devices According to the BBVA Innovation Center. This implies that we will be connected to the services that are present in the day to day of our city.

Smart Cities are cities that use technology in order to improve the quality of life of citizens through the optimal management of resources. It is a concept linked to the cities of the future that allows us to live in healthier, safer, sustainable and greener cities. The smart cities also involve a commitment that different agents have to take and are also a great business opportunity linked to innovation and information technologies.

More than the contribution of BI as a visualization tool, it highlights its use in the development of cities and the possibility of adoption by public organisms of BI tools with the objective of contributing to improve the quality of life of people and specifically of the own neighbors of the city.

Today, Big Data technology and analysis tools are being used to optimize nighttime security, reduce cleaning costs, optimize emergency resources and medical assistance, as well as the activity of security forces.

If it is possible to unify and optimize the management of the resources of the municipal centers and is oriented to the provision of services, it will achieve a clear improvement of the quality of life of citizens.

The management of security, emergency, traffic or cleanliness are some of the examples we have mentioned and that are far from the perception of BI applied to large businesses.

The optimization of resources will also affect or be focused on energy efficiency and energy savings, through better performance and concern to facilitate mobility, traffic and parking. Business Intelligence systems will reduce the time spent on travel, unnecessary waiting in offices or health centers.

Before the appearance of this new concept of city have also appeared organisms like the Spanish Network of Intelligent Cities, formed by more than 60 cities or the smart cities that promoted by the European Union.

According to the Cities in Motion index published by IESE Business School, Spain has Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona, Seville or Bilbao as some of the 50 most intelligent cities.
